Meta says your messages to its AI, your questions and the images you ask it to create can be used to train AI models, and it describes no setting to stop this for chats. Hamburg’s data protection authority wrote in 2025 that there is no option to object. Meta says it does not train on private messages with friends and family unless someone shares them with the AI.
Meta may review AI conversations, and the review “may be automated or manual (human)”. Since December 16, 2025, Meta uses AI interactions to personalise content and ads in most regions, excluding sensitive topics such as health, religion and political views. No specific retention period for AI chats is stated. You can delete chats in the Meta AI app, or type /reset-ai in Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp. Chats that use WhatsApp’s Private Processing cannot be read by Meta, according to the company.
Brazil’s data protection authority suspended Meta’s AI-training processing in July 2024, and Ireland’s DPC has published statements on Meta’s training on public posts.

In Messenger/Instagram/WhatsApp, '/reset-ai' deletes the AI's copy of your messages. No server-side deletion timeframe stated for chats; deleting a Facebook account 'may take up to 90 days'.
