Daily 9 October 26, 2026 brings together nine developments announced October 19–24. The list ranges from public AI investment and community moderation to payment rails, security coordination and workplace software. Availability varies: some tools are live, several are rolling out, and policy measures still need further legislative steps. Browse earlier editions, including yesterday’s brief.

1. Britain sets out an AI security and infrastructure package

October 24 · AI / Tech. The UK government outlined several investments ahead of the Chancellor’s coming Budget, including £165 million for an AI biosecurity initiative, another £120 million for the AI Security Institute and £60 million for a National Cyber Shield. It also described regional chip-design and skills projects. These are announced funding plans, not evidence that every lab or programme is already operating. The practical test will be how money, eligibility and delivery milestones appear in the Budget and later programme documents. HM Treasury announcement.

2. Tether’s MDK wins backing from 15 mining participants

October 24 · Crypto / Software. Tether said 15 mining operators, hardware makers and pools will build and maintain integrations for its open-source Mining Development Kit. Each participant is expected to supply an MDK Worker that translates selected functions into a common interface, rather than replacing its existing systems. Version 0.11 was tied to the October 23–24 Plan ₿ Forum, while the first stable 1.0 release is still targeted for year-end. Developers can inspect and test the current code now, but broad interoperability depends on those integrations being delivered. Tether announcement.

3. Meta gives Forum admins AI-assisted moderation tools

October 22 (updated October 23) · AI / Software. Meta expanded the US-only Forum app with Admin AI checks that label pending posts as likely compliant or potentially against a group’s own rules. The assistant can also draft posts for human review, while Admin Assist can combine conditions such as link use and prior moderation actions. Shared calendars and pinned comments broaden the collaboration layer. None of that makes moderation automatic: admins still set the rules and make approval decisions, and all posts remain subject to Meta’s Community Standards. Meta announcement.

4. Gemini can now manage notebooks inside a chat

October 23 · AI / Software. Google made Gemini Notebook a Connected App in the Gemini app. Users can ask Gemini to create or delete notebooks, add or update sources, list notebook contents and answer questions from that context. It is available now to Workspace customers, Workspace Individual subscribers and personal accounts, provided both services are enabled. The integration is on by default globally, except in the European Economic Area, where it starts off. Admins should check organisational access settings before treating the connection as universally available. Google Workspace announcement.

5. Google Vids separates audio from video clips

October 23 · Software. Google Vids is adding one-click audio extraction, turning a clip’s soundtrack into a separate timeline object that can be trimmed, moved or deleted without changing the video. Detached audio can also continue across scenes. Google says the feature is available across Workspace, Workspace Individual and personal accounts, with no admin switch. The rollout started October 19 and may take up to 15 days, so an eligible account may not show it immediately. This is a native editing control, not a new transcription or generative-audio feature. Google Workspace announcement.

6. OpenAI proposes a wider playbook for critical software flaws

October 21 · AI / Security. OpenAI described a coordinated response around two critical PHP vulnerabilities found by researchers using frontier models, with PHP maintainers leading the fixes and partners helping test protections before disclosure. Its proposed Patch the Planet framework covers upstream validation, limited advance notice, provider mitigations and public deployment guidance. OpenAI also published a PHP version-checking Codex skill. Operators should still follow PHP and their providers’ authoritative update instructions; the company’s account of AI’s role is not a substitute for checking affected versions or evidence of exploitation. OpenAI disclosure.

7. EU governments agree a Digital Omnibus negotiating position

October 21 · Tech / Policy. The Council of the EU agreed its mandate on changes covering GDPR, cookies, data rules and cyber incident reporting; the text was added on October 22. The position would permit additional no-consent cookie uses, including audience measurement and device security, and establish national reporting entry points for incidents covered by different EU laws. It also proposes GDPR clarifications and an extended breach-notification deadline. These rules are not in force: the Council must negotiate with the European Parliament after Parliament adopts its own position. Council announcement.

8. Tether backs Peso’s Latin American payment rails

October 21 · Fintech / Crypto. Tether led a pre-seed round in Bolivian fintech Peso, which provides a USD₮ account and connects stablecoin payments to local services and banking rails. Peso says its current infrastructure includes QR and ACH links in Bolivia and an in-app payment integration with Yango. The funding is intended to expand local on- and off-ramps across Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Argentina, plus merchant point-of-sale and virtual-account products. The announcement did not disclose the investment amount or a timetable for each market, so those remain open details. Tether announcement.

9. Gemini brings natural-language BigQuery analysis into Sheets

October 19 · AI / Software. Google began rolling out Gemini analysis for Connected Sheets linked to BigQuery. Users can ask questions across the full connected dataset, continue with follow-ups and request a plan for a refreshable spreadsheet view with formulas, pivots and charts. Access requires permission to query the data and an eligible Business, Enterprise, consumer or education plan; it is on by default and the rollout may take 15 days. Teams still need to review the generated analysis and permissions instead of treating conversational output as an audited result. Google Workspace announcement.
